October 1st dawned a bright sunny day at Low Laithes Golf Club near Ossett; A beautiful setting for the annual battle for the Ridings Cup against our rivals the Mark Province of North and East Yorkshire.
The course was in excellent condition, with our players toned and anxious to go. Unfortunately one of the team V.W.Bro. John Clough came down with a dose of man flu that morning and was unable to play, so guess who was roped to take his place – yep V.W.Bro. Bob Corfield. The team consisted of W.Bros. Jim Gray, Alan Morson, Alan Pendleton, Alex Steele, Neil Davies, Bill Jameson, Geoff Wood, Jim Stanley, Bob Corfield and Bros. Ian Carling, Ian Hughes, and Chris Cole. Hopefully a formidable side.
As usual the match was a very close and tense affair, and towards the end it could have gone either way with the North and East only requiring a half to retain the Trophy.
In the end it was 3 wins to West Yorkshire 2 wins to N & E and one Match halved. West Yorkshire now lead 4 matches!
An excellent meal followed with our Deputy and Assistant PGMs in attendance. The only down side being that having won the Trophy our PGM had to supply and present a bottle of Scotch to the losers, which was done on his behalf our DPGM, W.Bro. Richard Putrell.
We all look forward to retaining the Ridings Trophy next year when it will be played at the Driffield Golf Club, when battle will commence again!
V.W.Bro. Robert Corfield PGJO, PDPGM
