Status quo at Lightcliffe Lodge of M.M.M. No 715, Friday 20th October 2017.

No, sadly not the most talented, entertaining Rock Band of all time but , more importantly, the Installation of the Worshipful Master for the ensuing year  However that is not strictly correct as the present Incumbent,  Worshipful Brother Robert Barton had refused to go and was therefore to be Proclaimed  Worshipful Master for 2017-2018

The Lodge being properly opened, the Provincial Grand Junior Warden, Worshipful Brother Edward Wilkinson together with Worshipful Brother John Maxwell, Elected Member of the Charity Committee were admitted, under the direction of Worshipful Brother Craig Bannister, Provincial Grand Assistant Director of Ceremonies.

By the nature of the appointment, this was a short ceremony, the Working Tools being very ably delivered Worshipful Brother Steve Turner. No address to the Worshipful Master that to the Wardens was in the hands of W. Bro.John Millington, to the Overseers, W.Bro.Ashley Baker and, finally to the Brethren W.Bro.Edward Wilkinson, all most professionally despatched. The Officers for the year were then Appointed and Invested, no surprises and Brother Kevin Beaumont, Senior Warden, can look forward, hopefully, to following W.Bro.Robert in twelve months time. The remaining agenda items then followed, the auditors elected, they being W.Bro’s.Barker and Parker, sounds like an Accountancy practice. Very good news in W.Bro.Peter Spence proposing a new member but then a proposition to increase subscriptions to £50 p.a., very few in favour!! But no one against, oh dear.

The Lodge then closed, a sumptuous Festive board followed, well worth the wait. Worshipful Brother John Sealey was the chosen one for the Toast to the Province and he duly rose to the challenge. Thoughtful reflections on the role of Provincial Officers the back bone of many Lodges, particularly in times of declining membership, in mentoring and guiding the Lodge and its Brethren. This was taken up W.Bro.Edward in his response ho emphasised that we are all custodians of our Lodges to pass them on to our successors, fit for purpose,  He congratulate W.Bro.Robert upon his second term and expressed the hope that it would be a successful and happy year. Dates for your diaries,  the Annual Meeting of the West Yorkshire Provincial Grand lodge of Mark Master Masons will take place on Saturday, 7th April 2018 at Bradford Grammar School. We are all invited the P.G.M. to his Lodge and courtesy dictates that as many of us as possible attend. W.M’s should consider asking their Wardens to join them and some Junior Brethren for the experience, put it in your diaries now. In addition, the Christmas Fayre will be held at Greenhead Masonic Hall on Sunday 26th November and the Annual Carol service at Brighouse Methodist Church, Sunday 10th December.

Worshipful Brother Peter Doherty, the Charity Steward proposed the Toast to the Charities complimenting the Cleeves and Whitehead Trust upon the excellent support it provides to the Brethren and dependants of the Province. This was echoed W.Bro.John who confirmed that the Almoners Luncheons continue and the annual holiday which , in 2018 will take place at the Inn on the Prom, Lytham St Anne’s. The Trustees do, however, remain concerned that only 30% or so of the Brethren donate standing order and all the Brethren are asked to consider this very efficient method of giving, especially with gift aid included. Do not forget, ‘Your charitable donation today is their relief tomorrow’.

A thoroughly enjoyable Mark Masonic evening, but once again a tragedy that not one visiting Master in the Chair was present. Can I remind you all that it is a key responsibility of a Worshipful Master to represent his Lodge at Installations and other Ceremonies of note during his tenure.

What a delight it is to be a Mark Master Mason, smile, and show you are happy!

Worshipful Brother Duncan Smith P.G.S.D.
