Mark Inter Provincial Golf Match 2010, West Yorks v’s Yorkshire N&E

The Oaks, Aughton, Thursday 30th September 2010

West Yorkshire travelled away to a North & East Riding Venue at the Oaks, Aughton on Thursday, 30th September to defend the trophy which they retained last year at Harrogate.

Before they had even started, West Yorkshire were dealt a blow when one of their team, George Herd, broke down on the motorway and could not make the venue. That left Steve Kenyon to play on his own against the formidable pair of Les Race and David Broadley and though he lost the match on the 17th hole, a very good effort was made Steve.

David Fisher and Barrie Fothergill were 4 down after 7 holes and that was not what Bob Corfield had written in his script but the end of the first pair’s game they had pulled it back to record a win of 2 and 1 which gave West Yorkshire the first win. West Yorkshire lost the next 3 matches and the North & East went 3-1 up.

Coming up the 18th were Neil Davies and Alex Steele with no indication being given as to who was leading. That was until they putted out when Alex raised his arms to indicate another win for West Yorkshire. With one team still to finish and the score being 3-2 it was an anxious wait for both teams. Faces were pressed up to the club house windows and Bob Corfield and Bill Jameson made their way up the last. Only Bob’s bold steps gave any indication to the team members that he and Bill had managed the third win. The day ended with a 3-3 draw but gave West Yorkshire the win as they were able to retain the trophy.

Worshipful Brother Jim Steggles received the trophy on behalf of our Provincial Grand Master and while thanking both teams for a very close contest, said that the PGM had advised him not to return empty handed. An instruction he had pleasure in fulfilling.
