Excellence is a word used too often and often incorrectly in modern society but it most certainly applied to the meeting at Westbourne House, 2 July, start time 6.30. And,for those who have read the Elmete report, yes I did get there on time!
The Ceremony, under the leadership of the Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother Barry Richardson, was one of the best that I have ever seen in 32 years of Mark Masonry. The Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Dr. Rod Taylor was present and commented that it might have been the best that he had ever witnessed. The candidate, Brother Terence, ‘Terry’ Dawson, was totally absorbed events throughout and, when prompted, readily fulfilled his obligations. The Officers involved were a perfect blend of youth and experience with the Deacons, Worshipful Brothers David Hymas and Andrew Wright being a Past Provincial Grand Senior Warden and the current incumbent respectively
A modicum of humour was injected Brother Bruce Hammond, Registrar of Marks who, having overseen the selection process emphasised that it would be registered at Grand Mark Lodge and could not, thenceforth be changed, adding the words ’you have understood, haven’t you, it cannot be changed’. The signs and secrets were impeccably despatched Worshipful Brother Terry Dudley, with the Address to the Badge in the hands of Worshipful Brother Peter Smith, an example to all, and 90 years of age in two weeks. It did not stop there with duties being allocated around the Lodge; explanation of the Working Tools the Senior Warden, Brother Tom Woodley, .and Conclusion the Junior Warden, Worshipful Brother John Colwell. Throughout, they were impeccably shown the way the Worshipful Master, W.Bro. Barry, in a most relaxed, professional manner. This was not only an evening where the words and movement were almost perfect but where meaning was injected with the words, something of which the candidate, Brother Terry was clearly most aware.
Quite often, sporting metaphors relating to the Premier Football League are used to distinguish between the relative performances of Lodges. With the Mark season coming to an end , I have no doubt that Wharfedale Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 1027 will be Premier League Champions, much to the chagrin of Old York TI but I can assure you all that they will come out fighting next year.
At the Festive Board, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Dr. Rod Taylor reminded the Brethren that it was paramount that good ceremonies were undertaken. These are the foundation of our Order and will be fundamental in our continued health and progress. The Toast to the candidate, Brother Terry, was given his proposer, W.Bro. Terry Dudley and whilst we learnt something about Bro. Terry, an energetic and keen Mason, we also were given instruction in some cricketing strokes, ably delivered W.Bro. Dudley, no ball you understand. In his response, Bro.Terry showed that he is very much a confident, enthusiastic individual, a man of character, undoubtedly very much an asset to the Lodge.
An evening where all present, including a veritable ‘posse’ of Grand Lodge Officers, were richly entertained.
Smile, be happy, and enjoy your Mark Masonry.
W.Bro. D. Smith P.G.S.D., P.Prov.G.J.W.
